Welcome to QuickTalk™ v2.1.1, the speech therapist for your Mac! Follow the steps below, and in no time you'll have your mute Macintosh yapping away like a talk show host.
The Control Panels
Inside the QuickTalk™ 2.1 ƒ folder you'll find another folder, entitled For Control Panels Folder. Open this folder and drag the ◊Mission Control and Speech icons on to your System Folder. The system software will automatically place the two control panels in your System Folder:Control Panels directory. If you already have ◊Mission Control because of another app such as Online Army Knife, you may already have a newer version of the Control Panel. In that case, the system will warn you that you're about to copy an older verison. Cancel the copy, and try just the Speech icon.
Note: The Speech control panel (from Apple) provides control over the default voice as well as the default speech rate for each voice. Once you have established the speaking rates that suit you, you can actually remove this control panel with no ill effects. It's the same software, by the way, that's installed by the Apple Speech Technologies software, elsewhere on the "Macworld Mac SECRETS" CD.
The Extensions
Inside the QuickTalk™ 2.1 ƒ folder you'll find another folder, entitled For Extensions Folder.
As a convenience, we have licensed Apple's Speech Manager and Macintalk 2, Macintalk 3, and Macintalk Pro. According to Apple:
With System 6.0.7, 6.0.8 use MacinTalk 2.
With System 7 and 68040 or PowerPC use MacinTalk 3 and MacinTalk Pro.
With System 7 and 68030 of 33MHz or faster use MacinTalk 3.
With System 7 and a slower processor use MacinTalk 2.
Drag the appropriate extensions and the Voices folder on to your System Folder. The Finder will tell you if you have newer versions already present (just abort moving the files if so). Remember, all text-to-speech functions within QuickTalk require that the Speech Manager and at least Macintalk 2 be installed. Due to the superior quality of the additional voice synthesizers, we also highly recommend adding Macintalk Pro if your machine has a 68040 CPU or better.
Do note that some start manager type utilities (including the Startup Manager that ships with Now Utilities) check their own internal list of Extensions; if you run such a utility you should add the Speech Manager, ◊Mission Control, and the appropriate Macintalk extensions before restarting.
Incidentally, the ◊Mission Control control panel simply watches for your desired hot-key. The default is cmd-shift-T. If you remove or disable ◊Mission Control, QuickTalk will still "speak" the clipboard, but you'll need to switch to the QuickTalk application and select the Speak Clipboard menu item under the Speech menu.
The Voices
Apple includes some rather bizarre voices. We recommend purging your System Folder:Extensions:Voices folder of those you do not use. There are a couple of monstrous high-quality voices available that we didn't include. For example, Bruce is 2.2 megs. We didn't think the quality was great enough to add two more disks just for one voice, not to mention the demands it places on your system memory. However, if you're desperate to try Bruce, send us $5 for shipping and handling and we'll mail you two more disks.
The Applications
If you would like QuickTalk™, ClockTalk™, or CalcTalk™ to run automatically when you start your Mac, drag their application icons to the Startup Items folder inside of your System Folder. The most likely candidate is QuickTalk—if you need to be able to hear selected text frequently, it is most convenient to make it a startup application. Otherwise, any or all of the applications can be launched at your leisure just like any normal Macintosh program.
Restart!
Now restart your Macintosh. The new extension(s) will load automatically and any startup applications will launch. Be aware that QuickTalk is rather unassuming; as soon as it initializes things it immediately steps to the background and waits for a hot-key combination to signify that you want some text spoken. If desired, you can always select QuickTalk from the application menu in the upper right of the menu bar; it will become the foreground application and allow you to edit preferences, speak text, quit, etc.
Documentation
The documentation is in a stand-alone application called QuickTalk™ Docs which makes it easy to browse through the manual. Double-click it to start, and then check the Page menu for key equivalents.

Since he works at home, he probably couldn't hear you over the dull roar, even if he did have time for chit chat; however, he promises to check his email at least twice daily, and no matter how loud it gets, he can still read and type.
